Background and Objective: Since maltreated adolescents are at greater risk due to experiencing turbulent family relationships and unfavorable emotional environments, it is of particular importance to examine their differences from normal adolescents. The present study aimed to compare parenting styles, family emotional climate, and addiction tendencies in maltreated adolescents living in welfare centers and normal adolescents.
Materials and Methods: The research method was descriptive-comparative and the statistical population included all maltreated adolescents living in welfare centers and normal adolescents in Rasht in 1403. 218 individuals (109 maltreated adolescents living in welfare centers and 109 normal adolescents) were selected through convenience sampling and responded to the Baumirand (1971) Parenting Styles Questionnaire, Hillburn (1964) Family Emotional Climate Questionnaire, and IAPS (1992) Addiction Tendency Questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistical tests and analysis of variance in SPSS software.
Findings: The findings showed that abused adolescents had a more unfavorable situation in all three areas (parenting styles, family emotional climate, and addiction tendency) than normal adolescents (P=0.001).
Conclusion: Abused adolescents living in welfare centers are in a more unfavorable situation than normal adolescents in terms of perceived parenting styles, family emotional climate, and addiction tendency. These results also emphasize the importance of paying special attention to the family environment and psychosocial support in order to reduce vulnerability and prevent addiction tendency in this group.
