Abstract: (26 Views)
Background and Objective: The use of inappropriate parenting styles in raising children can contribute to the development of future problems in children. This study investigated the relationship between overparenting (helicopter parenting) and the occurrence of emotional and behavioral problems in children aged 7–12 years.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional correlational study was conducted among all 7–12-year-old children attending schools in District 1 of Hamadan during the 2025–2026 academic year. Using a multistage cluster random sampling method, 350 participants were selected from the target population. Ultimately, 276 completed questionnaires were collected and included in the analysis. Data were gathered using the Helicopter Parenting Questionnaire and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 24.
Results: The findings indicated that there was no significant relationship between overparenting style and students’ gender, students’ age, or mothers’ age. Furthermore, analysis of the relationships among variables showed that overparenting was positively correlated with emotional problems and peer relationship problems, and negatively correlated with prosocial behaviors. These correlations were statistically significant (P < 0.01).
Conclusion: Given that the results demonstrated a relationship between overparenting and the emergence of emotional and behavioral problems in children, educating parents about parenting styles and their long-term effects on children may increase parental awareness and reduce excessive parenting behaviors.
