Introduction: Preterm birth is a significant issue affecting many expectant mothers worldwide, with critical implications for the health of both mother and infant. Understanding the contributing factors can encourage expectant mothers to seek closer prenatal care, thereby significantly reducing the risk of preterm birth and its associated complications. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of preterm birth before 32 weeks of gestation and the factors associated with it in Hamadan Province during the years 2023–2024.
Methods: This study was conducted using a retrospective cross-sectional descriptive method, based on information recorded in the SIB system of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. 457 deliveries under 32 weeks were included in the study, and their demographic information and factors affecting preterm delivery were recorded in a designed questionnaire, and statistical analysis of the data was performed using SPSS version 26 software.
Results: The prevalence of deliveries below 32 weeks was 1.33%. By examining the demographic information, most mothers were primiparous (39.39%) and overweight (39.61%). 89.72% of mothers experienced at least one risk factor during pregnancy such as preeclampsia, rupture of membranes, bleeding. Chronic problems such as dental problems (49.71%), hypothyroidism (18.38%), and thalassemia minor (16.19%) were the most common. History of miscarriage (28%), cesarean section (27.35%), and previous premature birth (11.60%) accounted for the most records.
Conclusion: Identifying risk factors and taking timely action can help prevent preterm births. Furthermore, comprehensive assessment of mothers before and during pregnancy, along with timely follow-ups, can aid in the early detection and management of potential complications.
