Abstract
Introduction: Happiness, as a critical determinant of psychological well-being and academic performance, necessitates periodic investigation within the student population. This systematic review was conducted with the aim of determining the overall status of happiness among secondary school students in Iran.
Methods: This study was a systematic review conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. The international databases Scopus, Web of Science, PsycInfo, PubMed, the domestic databases Magiran and SID, and the Google Scholar search engine were searched until April 2024. Following screening, 40 studies encompassing data from 15,776 eligible students were included in the final analysis. Screening was managed using EndNote X9 software, and the quality of the included studies was assessed using the Hoy tool.
Findings: Quantitative data analysis indicated that the overall mean happiness score was at an acceptable level. However, subgroup analyses revealed significant heterogeneity: a significant decrease in the mean happiness score was observed as students transitioned from the first to the second stage of secondary education. Furthermore, statistically significant differences in happiness levels were reported between girls and boys.
Conclusion: The overall happiness status of Iranian middle school students is favorable, but gender and age differences are observed; support programs may be useful.
