Abstract: (25 Views)
Background and Objective: Self-harming behaviors refer to intentional and direct actions that a person takes without suicidal intent to damage their own body tissue. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of dialectical behavior therapy and emotion-focused therapy on distress tolerance and emotional self-regulation in adolescent girls with a history of self-harming behaviors.
Materials and Methods: The present study was an experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group and a two-month follow-up period. The statistical population of the present study consisted of adolescent girls with self-harming behaviors who referred to education counseling centers in Isfahan in the academic year 1403-1404.In this study, 54 adolescent girls who self-harmed were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups (19 adolescent girls in the first experimental group, 18 adolescent girls in the second experimental group, and 17 adolescent girls in the control group). The adolescents in the experimental groups received dialectical behavior therapy and emotion-focused therapy separately for ten weeks in ten 90-minute sessions. In this study, the Self-Injurious Behaviors Questionnaire (SHBQ), Emotional Self-Regulation Questionnaire (ESRQ), and Distress Tolerance Questionnaire (DTQ) were used. The data were analyzed by mixed variance analysis using SPSS23 statistical software.
Results: The results showed that dialectical behavior therapy and emotion-focused therapy had a significant effect on distress tolerance (P<0.0001) and emotional self-regulation (P<0.0001) of adolescent girls with a history of self-harming behaviors. Also, the results of the follow-up test indicated that there was no significant difference between the effectiveness of these two interventions on distress tolerance (p≤0.05). However, in the variable of emotional self-regulation, there was a significant difference between the effectiveness of these two interventions, and emotion-focused therapy was more effective than dialectical behavior therapy.
Conclusion: Accordingly, the two interventions, dialectical behavior therapy and emotion-focused therapy, can be used to increase distress tolerance and emotional self-regulation in adolescent girls with a history of self-harming behaviors.
