Background and Objectives: One of the challenges facing the current generation is the issue of suicidal thoughts, which is considered a serious mental health problem that requires thorough study. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop a structural model examining the relationship between meaning in life and childhood trauma with suicidal ideation, through the mediating role of coping styles.
Materials and Methods: The statistical population of this descriptive correlational study includes students of Tabriz Azad University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran. Out of these 3,200 students, 345 individuals were selected as a sample based on Cochrane, through voluntary and online sampling. The data collection tools were the Meaning of Life Questionnaires by Steger, Fraser Oishi, and Koller (2006), Childhood Trauma by Bernstein (1998), Suicidal Thoughts by Beck (1961), and Coping Styles by Lazarus Folkman (1985). The collected data were analyzed using the structural equation model.
Results: The findings of the present study revealed that the proposed model has an acceptable fit. A significant relationship was observed between meaning in life and childhood trauma with suicidal thoughts. Meaning in life was negatively related to suicidal thoughts, while childhood trauma had a positive relationship with those thoughts. Coping styles also had a mediating role between meaning in life and childhood trauma with suicidal thoughts.
Conclusion: Therefore, paying attention to psychological factors, such as meaning in life and childhood trauma can help design effective interventions to reduce suicidal thoughts. Moreover, these findings show the importance of paying attention to psychological interventions to improve coping styles.
