Background and Objectives: Body dysmorphic disorder is of interest due to its disabling nature, adverse individual and social effects, increasing prevalence rates, and cultural changes based on a greater focus on the body in the adolescent population. Therefore, the present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of psychodrama therapy on body image perception and fear of negative evaluation in adolescents with body dysmorphic disorder.
Materials and Methods: This quasi-experimental study used a pre-test-post-test design and a three-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population was all high school adolescents in Isfahan in 2024, of whom 36 cases were purposively selected and randomly assigned to two experimental and control groups (18 people per group) who were diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder using the Body Distortion Concern Questionnaire (DCQ) with a cut-off score of 50%. The BICI questionnaire and the FNES-B questionnaire were used to assess body image perception. The experimental group received 10 sessions of 90-minute psychodynamic therapy, with a frequency of one session per week. The Data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance and a Bonferroni post hoc test.
Results: The results showed that the effectiveness of psychodrama therapy on body image perception and fear of negative evaluation in adolescents with body dysmorphic disorder was significant (P<0.05), and the effect size values of each variable were 66.1% and 61.65%, respectively. It is worth mentioning that these effects remained stable in the follow-up phase.
Conclusion: The results indicated that psychodynamic therapy is effective on body image perception and fear of negative evaluation in adolescents with body dysmorphic disorder due to the principles of spontaneity, creativity, and corrective recreation of practical experiences. Therefore, the use of this approach is recommended in this group of adolescents.
