Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of premature death worldwide, and its risk factors are formed from adolescence. Medical students are considered a high-risk group due to educational pressures and lifestyle changes. This study investigates the relationship between these factors with anxiety, sleep quality, and physical activity in Hamadan medical students. Identifying these relationships is essential for designing preventive interventions.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 1403 on 384 students of Hamadan University who were selected by the proportionate stratified sampling method. Data were collected using a demographic information questionnaire, the Spielberger Anxiety Inventory (STAI), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 24.
Results: A total of 384 medical sciences students (mean age: 23.86 ± 3.30 years) participated in the study. Female students had significantly higher anxiety, poorer sleep quality, and lower physical activity than males (P<0.05). Anxiety and physical activity also differed significantly across faculties and educational levels (P<0.05). State and trait anxiety were positively correlated, whereas physical activity showed significant inverse correlations with anxiety and sleep quality (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Enhancing physical activity can help improve mental health and reduce the risk of predisposing factors for cardiovascular diseases in the future. Designing and implementing comprehensive health promotion programs that simultaneously focus on increasing physical activity, improving mental health, and modifying lifestyle seems necessary for university students.
