Abstract
Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between addiction to virtual networks and mental health of students.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical research, 362 students were sampled. The data collection tool was a questionnaire. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was used to assess the normality of the data distribution. Due to the non-normal distribution of the data, Spearman's correlation and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with using Smart PLS 3 and SPSS version 26 were employed for data analysis and hypothesis testing.
Results: The findings showed that the path coefficient between addiction to virtual networks and mental health was -0.291, which indicates a significant and inverse relationship. The path coefficient between psychological capital and mental health was 0.359, which indicates a direct and significant relationship. The path coefficient between addiction to virtual networks and mental health, considering the mediating role of psychological capital, was -0.106, which indicates that psychological capital indirectly has a significant and inverse mediating role.
Conclusion: The results showed that addiction to virtual networks negatively affects the mental health of students and strengthening psychological capital can help improve the mental health of students. Psychological capital as a mediating factor can reduce the negative effects of this addiction to some extent. The findings emphasize the importance of strengthening psychological capital in schools.
